Still crazy busy on the home front…

Lots of work wrapping up. Office floor, kitchen floor, moldings and such. Loose ends all over but getting closer to complete at this point.

Ground floor

The kitchen floor is getting done as we speak. New laminate flooring after we spent last weekend tearing out two layers of 1/8 inch plywood with all the appropriate staples and splinters. Come the weekend we’ll have to hit home depot for a bunch of base molding to stain and put up to replace the stuff that came out last weekend.

Putting the appliances back is going to be a bit of a challenge as we now have nice new flooring to haul them across. The fridge should be easy as it has wheels but the stove and washer/dryer are heavy and don’t roll. I’m expecting to use some of the old flooring material from the craft room to buffer this. Hoping that is sufficient.

I think I know how to manage the room transitions on the ground floor now. With the layers of plywood gone there’s a drop from the hardwood floors to the laminate that is nearly the full thickness of the hardwood. I’m thinking of cutting narrow strips of the hardwood flooring with 45 degree ease-offs on the outward facing sides. This is a similar look to what I did upstairs in the hall but will have the existing ‘T’ molding across the join.

Upstairs

The office floor is about a third of the way laid down. What remains to be done is straight and direct. No funny corners or doors to deal with. I’m hoping that I can get that wrapped up this weekend but there’s lots to be done and it may slip.

New moldings are needed all over upstairs. I’ve got the transition from the hardwood in the hall figured out and cut to size but need to stain it and drill holes for the screws that will secure it.

I’m planning to sand and refinish the top of my old desk (inherited from our first apartment so a bit battered when we got it). It is large and nice enough but the top needs some work. The new random orbital sander I bought should let me clean up the top and then I’ll probably stain it with a dark-wood stain followed by satin polyurethane to seal it.

The desk work will certainly delay the full reassembly of the office. I’ll likely get the basics back in once the floor and base moldings are done. I could rig a temporary desktop from some plywood I’ve got around…we’ll see as we get closer.

Other

Heaters to sand and spray. All of the heater grills need attention too as they were dismounted before the flooring work and thus have been a low priority as scheduler work progressed.

Got to shingle the roof of the catio. Currently it has roofing felt laid down but the shingles have also been low priority. This needs to get done before winter arrives for real.

Need to finish with the joints on the little furnace room and clean up the edges of the top cap (they’re a bit ragged and jut out too far). Once that is done this needs to get inspected for real.

Computer stuff is also on the list. Getting the VR system diagnosed and fully working is a priority as parts are easier to exchange sooner than later. Need to get the connections in the basement finished up and the trim for the GFIs cut and fitted.

Need to get the grout in the tiles around the drain channel by the back door. Need to get silicone on the backsplash tile in the kitchen and on the joints between the upstairs bathroom heaters and the wall tiles.
