We saw Suicide Squad today and it was a bad as the critics claimed

We went to the 4:30 showing and the place was not particularly packed.

The movie itself seemed a bit confused about its plot and direction. The pacing was horribly uneven. The characters weren’t engaging and the direction of the plot was telegraphed far in advance and very clumsily.

There may be spoilers below the break.

One article I read suggested this is what you’d get if you crossbred GhostBusters with cowboys and aliens. There certainly was a GhostBusters feel to the setting and ambiance with dark scenes in a deserted city and a bright goal post with the big-bad in the center.

DC seems to have a problem building engaging characters and team chemistry in recent films. In this one, none of the characters really had much depth or any real personal interest. I realize that a bunch of villains is difficult this way, but to make this film work, some sort of connection to the main characters was necessary. Harley Quinn and SharpShooter came the closest, but with the pacing problems and large cast of characters, they didn’t get enough time to really go beyond the basics.

If you’re a DC fan, this may be worth the price of admission. Otherwise I’d find something else to do until a more coherent piece of cinema comes along.
