We’re finishing up our short, quiet break in Cocoa Beach today and will be on the Disney Dream tomorrow heading out to sea for four days. I’m liking this multi-phase vacation so far and we generally have a good time on Disney Cruise ships so I expect we’ll enjoy the next segment…

More shots from yesterday’s boat tour
I’m still not through the complete set (even for a first pass) but here are some more shots…

Initial Shots from the Scenic Boat Ride Today
Here are some initial post-processing results from the scenic boat ride we went on today. They can probably be refined later a bit and they’re a fraction of what I captured. I’m about out of steam tonight so I’m posting what I have for now…

Settled in at cocoa beach for a few days before the cruise.
Lorna found us a great, quiet place towards the south end of cocoa beach to hang out until our cruise leaves on Monday. We’re at the Beach Place Guesthouses. Much quieter than the places closer to port Canaveral and directly on the beach. So far we’re having a great time here.
It was sad to see the videos of Maleficent’s dragon burning in the Magic Kingdom parade yesterday. I got some great shots only a couple days ago of the dragon which I’ll post in a bit. I never thought those might be the last shots of that incarnation (the head at least looked like a total loss from the pictures)…
Settling in at Cocoa Beach at the Beach Place Guest Houses for a few days.
We’re at the Beach Place Guest Houses and settling into our room. Very nice place to slow down and settle back for a bit (Disney always has me thinking of the things I could be doing if I’m not doing something).
I’ll post pictures in a bit…for now just chilling and getting things wired and connected.
Watching the last few episodes of Dark Matter
We’re finally getting around to watching the last few episodes of dark matter. I know it doesn’t end the story and I’m not looking forward to seeing the hanging end but the time has come.
I hope there will finally be some form of closure in the end. I know the creator talked about perhaps putting together a comic series to wrap things. Not sure how that went, but it would be good.
Still a cold day for March. Long day as well. Things have been moving very smoothly in getting the last bits of the current program wrapped and today was a bit on the rocky side. Hoping to wrap things up tomorrow so that the docs and related bits can get wrapped.
Looking to get to picking a board game to inspire some shared game coding up on the site and with a WebGL and Angular front end. I expect that the game rules will get build as PHP with persistence to MySQL.
March 1, 2018
A slightly jet-laggy day after flying back from California.
Still feeling delighted that Jonathan and Alyssa are so happily married and a bit sad that they’ll be separated by deployment for so long. Had a wonderful time visiting with them in California and looking forward to more opportunities in the future.
This was my first time in California and it the state is amazingly diverse (at least in the areas we visited) and has left me wishing to see more. I could definitely see myself moving out there if the right opportunity presented itself…having Alyssa stationed in the area is just gravy on top.
Got a little more C# sandbox coding done in the in betweens and read some PHP docs on the flight home. I’m hoping to wrap up a few useful, small C# based tools shortly and then take a stab at a simple web based Javascript game with a RESTful PHP back-end on my site. I’m not expecting anything earth-shattering…probably something loosely based on an old hex griddded board wargame with two player support.
Looking at more Java as my next project at work is going to be Java based. I’ve also been looking at Kotlin a bit as a JVM based language that is a bit less stodgy than Java. Loading up the latest Eclipse and Idea IDEs at the moment to scrub off any rust that has accumulated since I left Amazon Robotics…that and refresh my stand-alone java skills. Code at AR tended to live in very structured existing frameworks and get pushed through internal deployment stacks. I won’t have either to support me out here so time to fill in any gaps I may have on that front.
It was fun to roam the LA area last week, but it is nice to be back home now. Looking at a nasty snow and rain storm headed this way tomorrow though. Hoping we don’t get hammered too badly up here in New Hampshire. Suspecting that we will.
Currently I’m loading the photos from the wedding into LightRoom. I’ve got to clear space on the main archive volume so I’m currently just using the transport drive for LightRoom. Probably not going to be as fast as I’d prefer, but should do the job. I want to get these shots processed and up relatively quickly.
Alyssa and Jonathan are now Husband and Wife
Today Alyssa Wilson and Jonathan Park will be Married
Later today my daughter Alyssa will marry Jonathan Park here in Ventura, California. This will be a small affair at the court house as they are both deploying soon with their respective ships.
They met during their navy training and
became a couple through A and C school. We shared a wonderful vacation with them at Disney World this last Christmas season where the became engaged. Jonathan presented a ring to Alyssa by the fountains in Epcot France and then Alyssa reciprocated with a ring before the Illuminations fireworks the following evening.
I am delighted to see my daughter so in love and proud to have a fine young man joining our family. They make a wonderful couple and have a bright future to look forward to.
We arrived in Oxnard a bit ahead of things and have had a great couple of days exploring the area and hanging out with them. Jonathan’s parents arrived last night and we’ll be meeting up with them later today before the ceremony.
Yesterday we headed over to Ventura and roamed around. This is the first time either Lorna or I have been in California so we’re enjoying the new experiences along with the chance to spend time with Lys and Jonathan.
We’ll miss both of them while they’re on deployment. Looking forward to future chances to spend time and to hearing about their adventures together and apart as they begin their lives. Proud to see both of them finding their way in the world and learning the fine art of ‘adulting’ that we all spend the balance of our existence refining and dodging at various times.
