{"id":2212,"date":"2018-09-25T13:10:16","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T17:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ninecrows.com\/career\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2018-09-25T10:24:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-25T14:24:40","slug":"system-level-design-and-fpga-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ninecrows.com\/career\/2018\/09\/25\/system-level-design-and-fpga-options\/","title":{"rendered":"System Level Design and FPGA Options"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Reading a few things last night there seem to be new tools that work at a more abstract level than <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VHDL\">VHDL<\/a> out there. Mentioned were <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SystemVerilog\">System Verilog<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SystemC\">SystemC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Handel-C\">Handel-C.<\/a> I&#8217;ll have to take a look sometime in the future. For the moment I suspect that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VHDL\">VHDL<\/a> will more than meet my immediate needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve also been looking at FPGA choices a little bit. The Spartan-6 on the breakout board I&#8217;ve got looks about right for my initial sandbox work. I&#8217;d like to find smaller, larger and newer options for ongoing things&#8230;ideally something that is inexpensive enough to use as glue\/support logic and can be worked with without needing a custom PCB. It is also clear that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xilinx.com\/products\/silicon-devices\/fpga\/spartan-6.html\">Spartan<\/a> line is getting old and that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xilinx.com\/\">Xilinx<\/a> is shifting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xilinx.com\/products\/silicon-devices\/fpga.html\">FPGA<\/a> focus towards newer designs such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.xilinx.com\/products\/silicon-devices\/fpga\/artix-7.html\">Artix<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d like to look a bit at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Complex_programmable_logic_device\">CPLD<\/a> end of the spectrum as these seem to promise smaller, cheaper glue options, perhaps even with less demanding packaging choices. Wondering if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/products\/programmable.html\">Altera<\/a> has interesting options there&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reading a few things last night there seem to be new tools that work at a more abstract level than VHDL out there.
