Looks like the Note-7 is done for…

I’ve had a Samsung series note phone for a long time. I like the size and I rather like having a high quality stylus for non-text notes.

I’m sad to see that as of this morning, the Note-7 has been discontinued and the replacement phones recalled. Now I’ll be looking for an alternative . I’m guessing that the galaxy S7 edge and the new google pixel XL 128 GB may be reasonable possibilities.

I use my phone for many different things (and I really want to be able to side-load code that I write myself so an iOS device is a non-starter). At this point I suspect that I’m looking for the least loss of function rather than an equivalent replacement.

Things I want in a phone:

  • Android, ideally 7.1 with relatively direct updates.
  • Large screen. At least the size of the Note-7.
  • USB-C support with on the go capability for external thumb drives and chip readers.
  • Large internal storage or external micro-SD support. Prefer the chip cards as they let me grab and go with different subsets of things I might need. I’ve been living with the no chips Pixel-C tablet now though and it is workable.
  • Finger print reader. I didn’t think this was all that important when I got my note 7 but now I find that it is so much faster than typing a pin every time that I consider it pretty important.
  • High quality stylus (i.e. not one of the bubble tip finger surrogates that a re popular at checkout lines).
  • Waterproof would be nice. I tend to use a decent case so this can be worked around with an otter box.

So far Verizon has been ok on the support front through this mess. Not perfect, but much better than I had expected them to be. At this point it looks as if the Google phone will be out on the 20th if I want to go that way. The S7 edge is an older phone that has been available for some time now. Neither has a stylus so that’s unfortunate. The Google phone has 128 GB of storage but no built in chip reader. If it supports an on the go reader then I may be ok with that.

Going to try to get to the Verizon store sometime soon to see what they’re offering in detail and get this moving. It is a real pain to keep setting up my phone and then having to set it up again. It will be nice to get something that I can stick with for a good length of time.
