Inlaw water heater appears to have died

The inlaws told Lorna that they were getting no hot water a short while ago. I went to take a look an hour ago.  Found that power was getting to the unit but when I unscrewed the top access panel looking for activity lights I found a charred mess like this:

The manufacture date is Nov 2016 so I’m hoping to get a warranty replacement for them

It is in the small room off of the garage where the water heater that this one replace was located (that one installed by the contractor when the inlaw apartment was built).

We bought the water heater at home depot and it appears to be manufactured by Rheem Sales Company and sold through Home Depot. So far they have been very cooperative.

I’ll update as things progress…

So far looks very good they’re going to replace it and pay for labor in the process. Given that the unit needs to be drained and returned to home depot, that should make this much easier…the one this replaced didn’t get drained fully until I got it out into the yard and I’m not excited about doing that again 🙂
